AMD selects Critia Computer as an Embedded Design Partner

AMD’s New Focus on Embedded Computing Attracts Experienced Design Team

Embedded Systems Conference, San Francisco, CA – March 7, 2005 – Critia Computer, Inc. an innovative startup focused on standards-based computer modules has been selected as an AMD Embedded Design Partner and will be responsible for a reference design supporting the new embedded Opteron™ EE-series processors.

AMD, who recently announced their newest 64-bit processors specifically targeting high-end embedded applications will be providing customers reference design resources to help them capitalize on the move toward 64-bit and multi-core technology. Partnerships with experienced designers will help reduce the risks and bring in the design schedules significantly.

“This is a very strong move by AMD.” said Ken Boyette, Critia’s founder and president. “It shows how serious AMD is about being back in the embedded computing space. A number of years ago, I was responsible for developing embedded products based on AMD’s 32-bit x86 architecture. I’m convinced that AMD again has the right technology for many higher end applications. It will be rewarding to help them position the Opteron™ EE for adoption in this space.”

The reference design, code named “Polaris” will provide a module compliant with the industry standard CompactPCI® board form factor. CompactPCI is widely used and easily deployed with an extensive array of function modules available from dozens of manufacturers. This makes it an ideal platform for showcasing the embedded Opteron. Initially, the single-core low power Opteron processor will be offered with the ability to upgrade to the dual-core processor when it is released by AMD. Software support will include 64-bit versions of Linux and FreeBSD.

The Polaris-RDK or Reference Design Kit, will be available from AMD and will include all design-related collateral for easy adaptation to customer’s specific needs. The Polaris module will be manufactured and made available by Critia Computer.
