New VITA Standardization Efforts Sponsored by Critia Computer

HyperTransport Technology is the Focus of New Working Groups

Bus and Board Conference, Long Beach, CA – January 21, 2005 – Critia Computer, Inc. an innovative startup focused on high-end computer modules has agreed to sponsor two HyperTransport-based standards development efforts through VITA’s VSO organization.

HyperTransport™ technology is a scalable, low latency point-to-point interconnect used by processor vendors like AMD, PMC-Sierra and Broadcom. HyperTransport provides an extremely high speed path between processors and “in-box” peripherals. HyperTransport is itself an open standard maintained and enhanced by the HyperTransport Consortium.

“Our focus is on standards-based board design.” said Ken Boyette, Critia’s founder and CTO. “As a member of VITA, when we began working with HyperTransport enabled technology, it became immediately clear that there was a need to support it within the standardization structure of the VSO.”

Critia Computer provided the first proposal for HyperTransport adaptation the emerging XMC mezzanine card currently being finalized by the VITA 42 working groups. At the VSO meeting subsequent to the Bus and Board conference, the proposal received the requisite co-sponsorship from AMD and Curtiss-Wright Controls. The official working group was formed as VITA 42.4. Ken Boyette serves as the technical draft editor for this effort which has a target date for ballot submittal in March 2005.

At the same VSO meeting, Critia and AMD agreed to sponsor a similar effort proposed by Curtiss-Wright Controls for the next generation VITA 46 backplane. This effort was also adopted and is being developed within the VITA 46.5 committee. Critia has committed to actively contribute to the 46.5 technical working group.

HyperTransport is an enabling technology for emerging multi-processor HPC systems. The ability to implement similar architectures in high-end embedded applications will soon be possible with these standards.
